A documentary aired by "Al-Arabiya" on Friday revealed a plot orchestrated by the Islamic Group behind prison walls to assassinate the "leader" Adel Imam. Former member of the Islamic Group, Mohamed Kroum, disclosed during the documentary "Adel Imam... Egyptian Memory" that he was tasked by the group's leader Aboud Al-Zomor, while in prison, to assassinate the artist Adel Imam. Kroum emphasized that the original plan was to kill the late Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Mohamed Said Tantawi—when he was the Mufti of Egypt—for his approval of the execution of the killers of writer Farag Foda. However, Al-Zomor retracted the assassination plan against Tantawi, citing the need to avoid a significant public backlash following the murder of the Mufti, and then the orders were issued to assassinate the most famous Egyptian artist, according to Kroum.
Kroum, who would exploit his visits to his imprisoned father to receive orders from the leaders behind bars, noted that the Islamic Group issued a fatwa declaring Adel Imam an infidel, indicating that the plan began with monitoring the leader in the vicinity of the Pyramids Theatre, where the play "Bodyguard" was being performed. He added that "after observing him for a while and learning his schedule, they were to shoot him in front of the theatre," confirming that the group believed Imam had crossed all red lines after the film "The Terrorist."
