Twenty-year-old Mohamed Misran, a nursing student, volunteered to be the mussaharati, waking the residents to bring joy to the people of Gaza during Ramadan. Despite the suffering and harsh living conditions in Gaza, especially in the refugee camps, the residents of Khan Younis camp in the southern region decorated the streets and brightened them in celebration of Ramadan. For the occasion, the community made individual efforts to color the alleyways with vibrant colors reflecting their happiness for the holy month, as well as adorning the streets with strings of lights. They also held nightly gatherings after Tarawih prayers where residents sang praises and distributed nuts, sweets, coffee, and tea. Ramadan is associated with several rituals that distinguish it from other months in the region, with the "mussaharati" being one of the most important elements of Ramadan culture and a beloved historical figure among Arabs and Muslims. However, as society has evolved, the need for this tradition has diminished due to the multitude of awakening methods available today.
