Israel: We Will Work to Prevent Any Collapse of the Palestinian Authority

The Israeli cabinet has decided today, Sunday, that Israel will work to prevent any collapse of the Western-backed Palestinian Authority, according to a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office. Netanyahu's office noted that the cabinet decided to take action to prevent the collapse of the Palestinian Authority, although the decision was not unanimous. Eight members voted in favor, while one member voted against it and another abstained.

Netanyahu's office indicated that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense will present to the council "steps to stabilize the civil situation in the Palestinian arena." Israel has intensified its military operations in the occupied West Bank, where the Palestinian Authority has limited self-rule.

U.S. President Joe Biden, in an interview with CNN, mentioned that the Palestinian Authority "has lost credibility, not necessarily due to what Israel is doing, but simply because it lost credibility in the first place and then contributed to creating a vacuum for extremism in the second." He stated, "Israel is not responsible for everything happening in the West Bank; it is not the cause of all the problems, but it is part of the problems," referring to cabinet members from the nationalist camp who support the expansion of Jewish settlements.
