Guterres: The G20 Can Address the Climate Crisis

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated today, Friday, that "G20 leaders can tackle the climate crisis, which is spiraling out of control," urging leaders to "reform international financial rules," which he described as "outdated and unfair." In a speech delivered in New Delhi, Guterres said, "The climate crisis is worsening significantly, but the collective response lacks ambition, credibility, and urgency." He added, "I have proposed a climate solidarity pact where major emitters undertake additional efforts to reduce emissions, and wealthier nations support emerging economies to achieve this." Guterres highlighted that "the climate crisis is out of control. But the G20 countries are in a position to exert control." He called on the G20 to commit to maintaining the "1.5-degree goal," referring to the Paris Agreement's target from 2015 to limit the global average temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and to ensure it does not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius.
