British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged on Sunday, during the G20 Leaders' Summit in New Delhi, that Britain will provide two billion dollars to the Green Climate Fund to help developing countries adapt to climate change. A government statement noted that "this commitment will be the largest single financial pledge made by Britain to help the world address climate change."
The Green Climate Fund, the largest of its kind in the world, was established as part of United Nations negotiations on climate change to help direct funds needed by poor countries to achieve their own goals of reducing carbon emissions, developing cleaner energy sources, and adapting to global warming.
Britain has committed to spending £11.6 billion (14.46 billion dollars) on international climate finance from 2021 to 2026. Sunak's office stated: "Today's commitment represents a 12.7 percent increase over the UK’s previous contribution to the Green Climate Fund for the period 2020-2023."
