The World Meteorological Organization stated on Wednesday that "the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reached record levels last year," warning that there is "no end in sight" to this trend. The United Nations agency reported that "the average global concentration of carbon dioxide surpassed pre-industrial levels by 50% in 2022 for the first time."
The organization's Secretary-General, Petteri Taalas, remarked, "Despite warnings from the scientific community for decades, the issuance of thousands of pages of reports, and the holding of numerous climate conferences, we are still heading in the wrong direction."
This warning comes weeks before world leaders meet at the United Nations climate change conference (COP28) in Dubai, where governments will push for increased climate action, including a potential phase-out of fossil fuels before 2050.
