Israeli lawyers cast their votes today, Tuesday, in the bar association elections, focusing on the candidates' influence on the committee for selecting judges. The bar association presents two of the nine members for the judges selection committee, with other members coming from the Supreme Court judges, ministers, and parliament members, aiming to diversify the sources for selecting judges. Among the candidates for the bar association president is Amit Becher, who has publicly supported the protests against the judicial system reform and is close to former Justice Minister Aivi Naveh, who advocated for curbing the Supreme Court's power.
On the other hand, right-wing Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich opposed Becher, describing him as a "prominent leftist among leaders of the chaos and the extreme, hostile, and violent demonstrations witnessed in the streets in recent months." Becher denies having any political agenda, stating that "lawyers support his commitment to prevent the government's political takeover of the judges selection committee." Aivi Naveh also indicated that he would not be anyone's "agent" if elected.
