Twitter Punishes Accounts of Several Journalists Without Warning

Axios reported that Twitter suspended several journalists' accounts without prior notice, particularly those covering news about the platform and its new owner, Elon Musk. According to the report, the suspended accounts include Ryan Mac, a technology reporter for The New York Times; Drew Harwell, a technology reporter for The Washington Post; journalist Aaron Rupar; Donie O'Sullivan, a CNN political and technology reporter; Matt Binder, a technology reporter for Mashable; political commentator Keith Olbermann; Mika Lee, a technology reporter for Intercept; and Steve Herman, the chief national correspondent for Voice of America.

The notice displayed on the suspended accounts states: “Twitter suspends accounts that violate its rules.” In response to a tweet about these suspensions, Musk indicated that the accounts violated Twitter’s doxxing policy, which he revealed after suspending an account that tracked his private plane. He alleged that many of the suspended journalists' accounts had tweeted links to the plane tracker, stating that “accounts engaged in information probing receive a temporary suspension of 7 days.”
