The Knesset: Preliminary Approval of Judicial Amendments

The Knesset indicated that Israeli lawmakers expressed their preliminary approval today, Tuesday, for a bill that limits some powers of the Supreme Court in relation to the government. This follows an announcement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Parliamentary Constitution and Justice Committee voted in favor of the bill during a heated session that was broadcast live, which imposes restrictions on "reasonableness" as a criterion for judicial reviews. Three more discussions are still needed for the law to pass. Under current conditions, the Supreme Court can issue rulings against government decisions and elected officials if deemed "unreasonable." Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated, "You took the first step today, and God willing, more steps will follow to strengthen Israeli democracy." Following the committee's vote, the shekel weakened by 0.3 percent against the dollar. Three more discussions are still necessary in the parliament for the law to be enacted.
