Dozens of firefighters are battling flames that erupted in eastern and western Athens on Monday, as the country has been experiencing a severe heatwave since Thursday, with temperatures reaching 44 degrees Celsius. A forest fire intensified by strong winds broke out in Koveras, located about fifty kilometers east of Athens, according to the Greek firefighting service, while authorities ordered the evacuation of several resorts as a precautionary measure.
Yanis Artopiou, a spokesperson for the firefighting service, stated, "It is a difficult fire; the winds are very strong, ranging between fifty and sixty kilometers per hour." Seven water bombers, four helicopters, and 150 firefighters are participating in efforts to extinguish the fire on two fronts, according to local media.
