Ukraine is appearing before the United Nations International Court, facing Russia on June 6. The judges will hear Ukraine's claim that "Moscow violated a United Nations treaty by supporting pro-Russian separatists," as stated by a Dutch court which held them responsible for the downing of Flight MH17 in 2014. The International Court has scheduled four days for hearings on June 6, 8, 12, and 14 to listen to both sides in the case.
Flight MH17 of Malaysia Airlines departed from Amsterdam, heading to Kuala Lumpur, before being shot down over eastern Ukraine amid intense fighting between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces. This case was submitted in 2017 and is one of two cases brought by Ukraine against Russia in court. The other case was submitted by Ukraine following the Russian invasion in 2022, focusing on Moscow's claim that it invaded Ukraine to prevent genocide.
