Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi indicated today, Tuesday, that "Japan and China have agreed to resume high-level trilateral talks with South Korea, involving the leaders of the three countries and senior diplomats." Hayashi stated in a press conference that he and senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi reached this agreement on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meeting in Indonesia earlier this month. He added: "The meeting was very constructive for the leaders of China, Japan, and South Korea, countries that share a significant responsibility for the peace and prosperity of the region, to discuss cooperation and other issues." A trilateral summit has not been held since December 2019 due to diplomatic tensions between Japan and South Korea, which have since diminished.
