Russian news agencies reported yesterday that a court in Moscow has decided to detain American citizen of Russian descent, Gene Spector, on charges of espionage. The TASS news agency mentioned that Spector, a businessman, is already serving a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in 2022 for his role in bribing Arkady Dvorkovich, a former aide to the Russian Deputy Prime Minister. Spector was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and later moved to the United States. TASS indicated that he was the chairman of the board of the Medpolymerprom group, which specializes in cancer treatment drugs, prior to his arrest in 2021. The agencies did not provide any details about the new charges and noted that the court session was held behind closed doors after classifying the materials related to the case as confidential. White House spokesperson John Kirby stated in comments to CNN that the U.S. administration is still gathering information about the case and has no comment at this time. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
