Warner Bros. reported that the record-breaking opening for the film "Barbie" in theaters last weekend and early this week achieved higher than expected figures in initial estimates, with ticket sales reaching $162 million in the United States and Canada. "Barbie" leads this year's films based on the local weekend box office sales of its opening, surpassing the $146.4 million recorded by the opening of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" in April.
"Barbie" faces competition at the box office from Christopher Nolan's film "Oppenheimer." The final figures for "Oppenheimer" also showed an "increase," with revenues totaling $82.4 million in the United States and Canada from Friday to Sunday, compared to its expected amount of $80.5 million. Thus, both films exceeded expectations and contributed to the box office in North America surpassing $300 million for the fourth time in history.
