Flooding in New York and State of Emergency Declared

Heavy rainfall in New York has resulted in dangerous flooding, turning roads into waterways and sweeping away bridges. This prompted Governor Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency in Northwestern New York and Ontario County in the central part of the state, noting that "up to 200 mm of rain created life-threatening conditions due to flooding." She stated, "We are nearing a dangerous phase in these weather conditions."

The torrential rains have flooded roads, trapping citizens in their cars and homes, and causing power outages for over 12,000 customers. The National Weather Service indicated it has received multiple reports of serious flooding and people stranded in vehicles. They urged drivers to exercise caution. Route 218 (Storm King Highway/9W) in Orange County, New York, has sustained catastrophic damage, with a summer’s worth of rain falling in a single day.
