Ukrainian Parliament Approves Rustem Umirov as Minister of Defense

The Ukrainian parliament approved the appointment of former parliament member Rustem Umirov as Minister of Defense today, Wednesday, marking the largest change in the defense institution since the Russian invasion 18 months ago. Umirov wrote on Facebook after the parliament voted overwhelmingly in his favor: "Our main goal is to achieve victory," affirming that he "will do everything possible and impossible for Ukraine's victory." The Ministry of Defense wrote on X platform: "Welcome, Minister." Umirov (41 years old) replaces Oleksii Reznikov, who helped secure billions of dollars in Western military aid for the country while in office before being pursued by media allegations of corruption in the ministry, which led President Volodymyr Zelensky to dismiss him on Sunday.
