The Swedish national team, which played with a significantly altered lineup, advanced to the round of sixteen in the Women's World Cup with a perfect score, after Rebecca Blomqvist scored a header in the second half, and substitute Eileen Robinson added a second goal from a penalty in the 90th minute, leading to a 2-0 victory over Argentina on Wednesday.
Blomqvist met a precise cross from her teammate Sofia Jakobsson with a brilliant header in the 66th minute, putting the third-ranked Swedish team ahead before Robinson sealed the match with a successfully converted penalty.
Argentina, which lost midfielder Florencia Bonsegundo to injury just minutes before halftime, needed a win to have any chance of qualifying, but they failed to threaten the Swedish defense or goalkeeper Jennifer Falk.
Argentina remained winless, finishing at the bottom of the group.
Sweden will face the defending champion U.S. team in the round of sixteen, in a much-anticipated matchup in Melbourne next Sunday, replicating their quarterfinal clash in the Tokyo Olympics, where the European team won 3-0 en route to the final.
