Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced yesterday, Sunday, the death of ISIS leader Abu al-Hussein al-Qurashi in Syria, stating that "this person was neutralized in an operation carried out by the Turkish National Intelligence in Syria yesterday."
In an interview with the Turkish TRT television channel, Erdogan revealed that "the intelligence had been tracking him for a long time."
Local and Syrian security sources indicated that "the raid took place in the town of Jindires in northern Syria, which is controlled by opposition factions supported by Turkey and was among the regions most affected by the earthquake on February 6 that struck Turkey and Syria."
One resident recounted that "clashes began on the outskirts of Jindires last night and lasted for about an hour before the residents heard a large explosion."
Security forces later cordoned off the area to prevent anyone from approaching it.
Al-Qurashi was appointed as the leader of ISIS in November 2022 following the death of his predecessor in an operation in southern Syria.
