Senegal Sea Washes Ashore Bodies of 15 Migrants, Number Likely to Rise

Senegalese President Macky Sall announced that at least 15 people drowned after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of the Senegalese capital, Dakar, on Monday. The incident occurred off a beach in the Wakham area in the early hours of Monday morning. Babacar Diallo, a fisherman from the Wakham region, stated, "There were at least 12 bodies on the beach, and two people came out alive." Additional bodies were washed ashore hours later. Diallo added, "They are still retrieving bodies, but the waters are not calm. We pointed out to them the places where they might find other bodies... perhaps there are more bodies." Senegal has seen an increase in the number of migrant boats attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean to the Spanish Canary Islands. Despite being one of the deadliest maritime routes, recorded incidents have not deterred those seeking to migrate.
