Arsenal, competing in the English Premier League, announced today, Thursday, that its CEO Vinai Venkatesham intends to resign next summer. Venkatesham joined Arsenal in 2010 and became managing director in 2018 after Ivan Gazidis moved to AC Milan, before taking on his current role in 2020. Venkatesham stated in a statement, "It has been a difficult decision, but it is time to seek another challenge. This is not a farewell moment. I will maintain my focus until my last days (in the role) and I will support a smooth transition."
Venkatesham leaves a team that has experienced a resurgence under manager Mikel Arteta, finishing last season in second place in the league behind Manchester City, thus securing a Champions League spot for the first time since the 2016-2017 season. Club co-chairman Josh Kroenke remarked, "The board fully supports Vinai's desire to pursue the next challenge." He added, "While business continues as usual with everyone focused on the season, we would like to take this moment to thank him for his contributions and long service."
Arsenal, currently in fifth place, two points behind league leaders Manchester City, will visit Everton on Sunday.
