The United Nations Security Council will vote today, Wednesday, on a resolution drafted by Brazil that calls for a humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas to allow humanitarian aid to reach the Gaza Strip. Diplomats indicated that the council is also expected to discuss, at the request of the UAE and Russia, the bombing of the "Baptist" Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza, which resulted in hundreds of casualties on Tuesday. The Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, held Israeli forces responsible for the "massacre" at the hospital and called for an immediate ceasefire.
It remains unclear whether the United States, which has the veto power and typically protects its ally Israel from any action in the Security Council, will allow the adoption of the resolution. The draft resolution urges Israel, without naming it, to revoke its order for civilians in Gaza to move to the southern part of the Palestinian territory. The Brazilian resolution is essentially a more detailed version of a Russian draft that the council failed to approve in a vote on Monday, but it specifically condemns the "terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas." Instead of calling for a ceasefire, it calls for a temporary halt to hostilities to facilitate the delivery of aid to Gaza.
