Martin Griffith, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, expressed concern today regarding the rise in violence in Sudan, stating that "the prolonged conflict could push the entire region into a 'humanitarian disaster'." In a statement sent to journalists today, he added: "This conflict, spreading like wildfire, along with the resulting hunger, disease, and displacement, now threatens to consume the entire country." He highlighted specific concerns about the safety of civilians in the Al-Jazira state, which is considered the breadbasket of the country. He revealed that "hundreds of thousands of children are suffering from acute malnutrition and face the risk of death if left untreated."
