A spokesperson for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced today, Wednesday, that "the organization's executive director, Catherine Russell, was injured in a car accident in Egypt yesterday, Tuesday, while she was en route to the Gaza Strip, and she had to postpone her visit to Israel due to her injuries." Koutres Cooper, the media director at UNICEF, stated: "While we were heading to Rafah, we believe that the car collided with or tried to avoid a large pothole, leading it to fall into a ditch and overturn on its side." He added that Russell "sustained significant bruises and is feeling a bit tired, but her injuries are not considered serious." He further mentioned that Russell continued her visit to Gaza before doctors decided that she needed further care, prompting her to postpone the remainder of her visit to the region, which included Israel, where she hoped to meet families of kidnapped children.
