The United Nations called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas for humanitarian reasons on Tuesday, after more than three-quarters of the 193-member General Assembly supported this move, which the United States vetoed in the Security Council last week. Washington does not have veto power in the General Assembly. A total of 153 countries supported the ceasefire resolution, while Israel and eight other countries opposed it, and 23 countries abstained from voting. Although the resolutions of the General Assembly are not binding, they carry political weight and reflect a global viewpoint on the war.
