Residents in Kent, England, experienced a terrifying day reminiscent of horror movies, as they woke up to a pink sky at dawn, leading some to believe it could be the "end of the world." According to a report from the British newspaper "Mirror," the pink hue of the sky frightened the hearts of residents in the Thanet area when they discovered the unusual color in the early morning and began questioning what had happened. Images of the pink sky quickly spread on social media as locals shared them widely.
However, the situation was soon clarified, revealing scientific rather than supernatural reasons. The newspaper reported that the cause of the sky's pink color, which "looked like part of a sci-fi movie," was due to the nearby greenhouses, which are the largest in the country. According to the Thanet Earth website, approximately 400 million tomatoes, 30 million cucumbers, and 24 million peppers are produced annually in those agricultural greenhouses.
The southeastern location of this large complex was chosen for its long hours of sunlight, which benefits the growing plants. However, the British winter poses significant challenges, as plants require light, leading to the use of artificial light alternatives during this time of year. A spokesperson for Thanet Earth explained, "As a responsible local company, we continuously monitor how our operations impact the surrounding community, and under certain weather conditions, there will inevitably be some light reflected in the sky, especially when there is a low-density cloud cover above."
