French President Emmanuel Macron attended the funeral of Dominique Bernard, a 57-year-old teacher who was fatally stabbed at his school in a suspected Islamist attack that occurred six days ago in the city of Arras in northern France. Macron and his wife, Brigitte, also a former teacher, spoke with Bernard's family before the funeral ceremony, which was also attended by Bernard's colleagues and students carrying white flowers. The suspect in the attack is a 20-year-old man named Mohammed, who is currently under formal investigation for murder linked to Islamist groups. The young man had previously been a student at the same school where the attack took place. France has been on high alert since Bernard's murder. The country has experienced a series of attacks carried out by Islamist militants over the past decade, the deadliest of which was a coordinated attack by armed individuals and suicide bombers on entertainment venues and cafes in Paris in November 2015.
