Indian Prime Minister to Open New Parliament Complex Next Sunday

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a new parliament complex next Sunday, aimed at renewing buildings dating back to the British colonial era in the heart of the capital and giving them an Indian identity. The new parliament complex is located in front of the heritage building designed by British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker in 1927, two decades before India's independence.

The government stated that it will "transform the old parliament into a museum," considering that "there is an urgent need for a new parliament building, as the current premises suffer from issues including infrastructure, technology, and safety."

The new parliament includes a total of 1,272 seats, which is about 500 more than the seats in the old building, and its area is at least three times that of the old parliament.
