The U.S. Treasury Department announced today that the United States and the United Kingdom have imposed additional sanctions on individuals and groups affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). A recent update on the British government’s website indicated that the U.K. has added six new names to its terrorism sanctions list, including four individuals linked to Hamas.
The department stated that "the action taken in coordination with the U.K. targets key leaders in Hamas and the mechanisms through which Iran provides support to Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad." Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized that "the United States will continue to work with our partners, including the United Kingdom, to deprive Hamas of its ability to raise and use funds to carry out its brutal actions." She added, "Hamas’s actions have caused immense suffering and demonstrate that terrorism does not occur in isolation; we are working decisively with our partners to undermine the financial infrastructure of Hamas, deny it access to external funding, and prevent new funding channels they seek to finance their heinous acts."
