Condition of the Niger President: Without Electricity and Eating Dry Rice and Pasta

The ousted President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, shared details of his detention conditions today, Wednesday, claiming that he has "turned to eating dry rice and pasta," in text messages that have been verified and relayed by CNN with his consent. Bazoum stated in the messages that he and his family have been without electricity since August 2 and have been deprived of any communication with others, including his doctor. He added that this means he is only able to consume food that does not have an expiration date, as all perishable items have run out due to the lack of electricity. Bazoum concluded by saying, "If the fuel runs out, we won't be able to eat anything; we only eat dry rice and pasta." The legitimate Prime Minister of Bazoum, Oumoudo Mohamedou, stated on French television that the detained president lives in a "catastrophic situation," but he maintains "high spirits."
