Scotland won 3-0 against Cyprus at the start of their journey in Group A of the Euro 2024 qualifying tournament, with substitute Scott McTominay scoring two goals at Hampden Park on Saturday. Scotland received tremendous support from fans, dominating the first half, and opened the scoring after 20 minutes through an unmarked John McGinn, who benefited from a deflected pass from captain Andy Robertson.
The second half was weaker, and Scotland failed to extend their lead before McTominay managed to add the second goal in the 87th minute. Lyndon Dykes sent a high ball into the area towards the Manchester United midfielder, who controlled the ball and fired a powerful shot into the net from close range. McTominay completed the scoring in stoppage time when Cyprus's defense failed to clear a ball inside the box, allowing Robertson to assist his teammate for the third goal.
Cyprus faced further trouble in stoppage time, finishing the match with ten players after Nicolas Ioannou received a second yellow card for seemingly saying something to the referee. Scotland will play Spain next Tuesday, while Cyprus visits Armenia.
