Explosion at Turkish Port Silos: Initial Diagnosis Suggests Flour Dust (Video)

Kocaeli Governor Sıdar Yavuz announced that at least ten people were injured today, Monday, as a result of an explosion that shook grain silos near the port of Derince in western Turkey, prompting authorities to conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. The governor stated that the explosion occurred near silos belonging to the Turkish Grain Board. He added, "Preliminary assessments indicate that the explosion was caused by pressure from flour dust during the transfer of wheat from a ship to the silos." He continued, "We have been informed that it is technically possible for an explosion to occur due to flour dust pressure, but we are investigating all possible causes." He mentioned that two of the injured are in critical condition and receiving treatment at the hospital. The Ministry of Transport confirmed that no ships were damaged due to the explosion. Derince Mayor Zeki Aygun stated: "An explosion occurred a little while ago. We thought there was an earthquake. We are at the scene. We are currently transporting the injured to the hospital. Investigations are ongoing." It was reported that the force of the explosion shattered windows in nearby buildings. Specialized chemical teams were also dispatched to assess the situation and ensure the safety of the site.
