Meetings in Paris: Lebanon and the Specifications for the Next President

Sources from diplomatic circles revealed to “Al-Liwaa” a series of meetings held in Paris in recent days, attended by officials from the French foreign ministry and a prominent Arab diplomat. These discussions focused on the situation in Lebanon, the presidential elections, and how to assist in resolving the financial and economic crisis the country faces.

They stated that the attendees concluded, during their three-day meetings, to expedite the election of a new president for the republic who will garner support from the Lebanese people, will not favor one group over another, nor will he align with a foreign state at the expense of Lebanese interests. The new president should maintain the highest Lebanese interests and enjoy good relations with his Arab neighbors and friends abroad.

The sources emphasized that electing a new president with these specifications and forming a new government that reflects the aspirations and hopes of the Lebanese people is an essential step towards the rescue of Lebanon from its crisis and securing assistance from Arab and friendly countries, as well as international funds. They noted that the approach of certain parties to elect a confrontational president who represents the views of only one side would push Lebanon toward political alignments and regional conflicts, leading to hostility with Arab states. This would certainly result in Lebanon remaining mired in its complex crisis and isolated from its neighbors and friends in the world.
