Climate Protests in the Netherlands and the Arrest of 500 Activists

Dutch police reported today, Sunday, that they arrested over 500 climate activists during the second consecutive day of protests against government support for the fossil fuel industry. Hundreds of protesters marched on the A12 highway leading to The Hague around noon, ignoring authorities' warnings not to block the main traffic artery leading to the Dutch government headquarters. Approximately 2,400 demonstrators were detained yesterday, Saturday, as around ten thousand activists blocked the same highway for several hours. The group Extinction Rebellion, which organized the protests, states that demonstrators will attempt to close the highway daily until the Dutch government stops using public funds to support the oil and gas industry.
