Pentagon Fears "Out-of-Control Artificial Intelligence"

Pentagon Fears

According to Bloomberg, the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) has called on artificial intelligence companies to speak more about their technologies. The Pentagon is reportedly concerned that artificial intelligence has become out of control, drawing comparisons to technologies from other planets. Craig Martell, the director of the Pentagon's digital and artificial intelligence division, urged American companies to provide available information on how AI programs are designed so the department can feel more secure.

Martell stated: "We are simply getting only the final result of the model's creation, and that is not enough. They tell us: 'This is the model. We will not tell you how we did it, nor will we inform you whether it is good or bad. We do not disclose whether it is biased or not.'" He views these models as technologies from outer space for the U.S. Department of Defense. He added: "We want to understand the uses of these models, their benefits, risks, and how to mitigate them."
