Medical Analysis Reveals Reasons for Disrupted Sleep in Post-COVID Patients

Maxim Sutorin, the chief independent neurologist at the Ministry of Health in the Moscow region, stated in an interview with the Russian news agency "Novosti" that interrupted sleep may indicate a previous infection with the coronavirus. The specialist confirmed that lack of sleep can result from a coronavirus infection, noting that insomnia is merely a side effect. The issue lies in the disruption of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems in the human body during sleep.

He explained, "Firstly, fibrosis occurs in those who have recovered from the coronavirus, causing breathing difficulties and short pauses in lung ventilation during sleep. Secondly, after recovering from COVID-19, heart rhythms may become irregular, which also prevents proper sleep." Such disturbances can affect both young and middle-aged patients. Consequently, sleep disturbances can become one of the manifestations of post-COVID syndrome.

Dr. Yuri Bekitov recommended paying attention to stress and tension levels, as the body weakens under severe pressure. This can facilitate the contraction of the coronavirus or any other infection. To assess stress levels, the doctor advised undergoing brief psychological tests.
