Officials reported that at least 16 workers were killed after a crane collapsed while constructing a bridge in Maharashtra, western India, and there are concerns that some workers may be trapped. Television footage showed debris from the crane on the ground between the bridge supports near the Shahapur area, around 80 kilometers from Mumbai, the state capital. Mohsin Shahidi, a senior official from the National Disaster Response Force, noted that "rescue teams are trying to recover the bodies, and at least 16 deaths have been recorded." Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office posted on the social media platform X, stating: "I am pained by the tragedy in Shahapur. I extend my condolences to the families of the deceased." Modi's office announced a relief assistance of 200,000 rupees (2,430 dollars) for the family of each deceased and 50,000 rupees (608 dollars) for each injured person.
