Finnish President Sauli Niinistö stated today, Monday, that "it has become impossible to repatriate asylum seekers who do not meet protection criteria, and this must be taken into account when formulating policies." During a state visit to Poland, Niinistö said, "The deportation of migrants who do not meet asylum standards has become impossible, so entering through the border means staying in the country if desired." Niinistö called for "a solution at the European Union level to stop the uncontrolled entry into the region where travel does not require passports."
Finland closed four crossing points on its border with Russia on Saturday, as part of Helsinki's efforts to halt the influx of asylum seekers that it claims are "being prompted by Russia," leaving only four centers open. The Kremlin denies sending migrants, stating, "Finland's decision to close the border crossings reflects Helsinki's anti-Russian stance."
