Texas authorities have arrested nearly 10,000 migrants who illegally crossed the border between the United States and Mexico, as part of an operation aimed at deterring illegal immigration. Following these successful arrests, Texas has enacted a new law that is expected to enhance the smaller scale operation to expand the authority to conduct arrests, as well as grant local judges the power to issue orders for the deportation of migrants. These measures are set to take effect in March. The new law comes after Texas previously launched a smaller scale operation to arrest migrants for misdemeanor trespassing in July 2021, during which the number of border crossings between Texas and Mexico reached 1.2 million that fiscal year.
