The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, began a five-day visit to the Middle East today, Tuesday, to engage with government officials and civil society regarding human rights violations occurring amid the Israeli escalation in Gaza. Turk stated in a statement, "It has been a month of massacres, of ongoing suffering, bloodshed, destruction, anger, and despair. Human rights violations are the root of this escalation, and human rights play a key role in finding a way out of this cycle of pain." Turk's office noted that he is in Cairo today, Tuesday, and will visit Rafah, located on the border with Gaza, on Wednesday before traveling to the Jordanian capital, Amman, on Thursday.
