Boris Johnson Resigns from the British Parliament

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned from Parliament today, Friday, in protest against lawmakers investigating his actions, which will lead to a by-election for his seat, which he won by a narrow majority. Johnson stated that he is resigning because it is "obvious" that the committee is "determined to use procedures against me to expel me from Parliament." He pointed out in a statement, "A small handful of people have forced me out of Parliament without evidence to support their claims and without even the consent of Conservative Party members, let alone the wider electorate." Johnson has struggled for his political future amid a parliamentary investigation into whether he misled the House of Commons when he stated that all COVID-19 rules were being followed, despite holding parties in government buildings during the lockdown. The parliamentary privileges committee has the authority to recommend suspending Johnson's membership for more than 10 days if it finds that he misled Parliament recklessly or deliberately, which could lead to a by-election for his seat.
