"X" Allows Political Advertisements Before U.S. Elections

The company "X" (formerly Twitter) announced that it will now permit political advertisements in the United States for candidates and parties, and it will enhance its team specializing in safety and elections ahead of the 2024 presidential elections. Twitter had banned all political advertisements globally since 2019, prior to billionaire Elon Musk's acquisition of the company last October. Twitter lifted the ban in January and began allowing advertisements that are based on ideas, issues, or goals in the United States to raise awareness on matters such as voter registration. The platform stated its intention to expand the types of political advertisements allowed. Allowing all political advertisements in the United States could help "X" grow its revenue at a time when many advertisers have left the platform or reduced their spending due to concerns about their ads being displayed next to inappropriate content. "X" said in a blog post on Tuesday that it will enhance its teams dedicated to combatting content manipulation and "emerging threats." The company stated it will create a global center focused on advertising transparency that allows users to see the political advertisements being promoted on the platform, and added that it will continue to ban political advertisements that disseminate false information or aim to undermine public trust in any electoral process.
