Britain Warns Its Citizens Against Traveling to Morocco

Britain has warned its citizens planning to travel to Morocco against crossing the maritime border into Algeria following the deaths of a Moroccan and a French national from Algerian coast guard gunfire. The British Foreign Office stated in a warning to its citizens that "the land border between Algeria and Morocco is closed. Do not attempt to cross it. The border extends into the sea." It added: "If you are on a boat or renting a jet ski, ensure you know where the maritime border is and stay clearly within Moroccan territorial waters. Make sure you have enough fuel to return to shore."

The Algerian Ministry of Defense announced that "a unit of the coast guard from the Western Maritime Front in the second military region intercepted three jet skis that had breached our territorial waters on the evening of Tuesday, August 29, 2023." It further stated: "After issuing a sound warning and several orders to stop, which were refused, the jet ski operators performed dangerous maneuvers. Given that this border marine area is known for intense activity by drug smuggling gangs and organized crime, and in response to the defiance of the jet ski operators, the coast guard personnel fired warning shots."
