In its recent war on Gaza, Israel is using an advanced Iron Dome system called "David's Sling," despite American involvement in the development of its defense system. As the hours unfold, the effectiveness of David's Sling will be assessed based on the number of rockets that evade the updated system. The name is derived from the story of the prophet David, who defeated the mighty warrior Goliath using a sling. David's Sling is a short- to medium-range missile defense system designed to counter rockets with ranges between 100 and 200 kilometers, low-flying aircraft, and guided missiles. Thus, David's Sling fills the gap between the Iron Dome system for intercepting short-range rockets and the "Arrow" system for intercepting long-range missiles currently used by Israel. This indicates that Palestinian factions are now utilizing long-range missiles. In 2008, the United States and Israel signed an agreement for the joint development of the David's Sling system. David's Sling was developed and manufactured by Israel's state-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems in partnership with the American company Raytheon. It was also designed to intercept cruise missiles.
