German police arrested a man and rescued a girl suspected of being held hostage at Hamburg Airport on Sunday, bringing an end to a crisis that forced authorities to close the busy transport hub for several hours. Officers reported that a man, whom police believe was armed with a gun and possibly explosives, crashed through the airport gates in a car last night.
The police explained that the 35-year-old man was with his four-year-old daughter and is believed to be involved in a custody dispute with his wife. They stated, "The hostage situation has ended, and the suspect emerged from the vehicle with his daughter. Emergency services arrested him without resistance. The child appears to be unharmed."
The airport indicated that it is working to resume operations as quickly as possible. Earlier, they had announced that 286 flights were scheduled to take off and land, carrying approximately 34,500 passengers on that Sunday.
