The Supreme Judicial Council revealed a "concerning" statistic regarding divorce cases for the month of August 2023. According to the latest monthly statistics on marriage and divorce in Iraq, there were 19,416 new marriages in August, while the number of divorce cases reached 6,973, which translates to approximately 232 divorce cases per day in Iraqi courts, averaging 9 cases per hour. Baghdad topped the list for both marriages and divorces.
Furthermore, more than 73,000 divorce cases were recorded in Iraq last year, according to official data, indicating a significant increase compared to previous years. The Supreme Judicial Council publishes detailed monthly data on divorce cases in Iraq, excluding those registered in the courts of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, suggesting that the actual number may be higher when accounting for all cases nationwide.
