UN Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed today, Monday, that protecting civilians "must be the priority" in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas, warning that the Gaza Strip is becoming a "graveyard for children." Guterres told reporters, "The ground operations being carried out by Israeli forces and the ongoing bombardment are hitting civilians, hospitals, refugee camps, mosques, churches, and UN facilities, including shelters. No one is safe." He continued, "At the same time, Hamas and other armed groups are using civilians as human shields and continue to launch rockets indiscriminately at Israel." He stated that clear violations of international humanitarian law are occurring and once again called for a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons.
