At least 100 elephants have died in Zimbabwe's largest national park in recent weeks due to drought. Authorities have warned that "more elephants may perish as weather forecasts indicate a scarcity of rainfall and rising temperatures in parts of the southern African nation, including Hwange National Park." Tenash Farawo, a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, stated, "The El Niño phenomenon is exacerbating the already dire situation." El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon that causes an increase in temperatures in certain areas of the Pacific, affecting weather patterns globally. While this year's El Niño has recently caused deadly floods in East Africa, it is expected to reduce rainfall amounts below average across southern Africa. Studies indicate that "climate change may amplify the intensity of El Niño, leading to more severe consequences." Authorities are concerned that a repetition of the events of 2019 may occur, when over 200 elephants died in Hwange due to severe drought.
