Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen announced today, Tuesday, that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is not qualified to lead the international organization, pointing out that he has not done enough to condemn the Hamas movement. His remarks, made at a press conference inside the UN building in Geneva, represent an intensification of Israel's criticisms of the organization and come in the same week that the UN reported the deaths of over 100 of its staff since the onset of the conflict in Gaza. Cohen stated at the press conference in Geneva, where he was meeting with leaders of the World Health Organization and the International Red Cross alongside relatives of Israeli hostages, "Guterres does not deserve to be at the head of the UN." He added, "I believe Guterres should say clearly and loudly, 'Liberate Gaza from Hamas,' similar to what every free nation says. Everyone has said that Hamas is worse than ISIS. Why can’t he say that?"
