Jewish actress and filmmaker, Yula Benivolski, announced her renunciation of Israeli citizenship, despite having held it since birth and living in Israel for 23 years. Benivolski shared a short video on her Instagram account revealing her decision to give up her Israeli citizenship and her opposition to Zionism, citing the aggression of occupying forces against civilians in Gaza that has lasted more than a month and a half and resulted in the deaths of over 15,000 Palestinians, including children and women.
In the video, posted yesterday evening, Yula Benivolski detailed the steps she took in Toronto, Canada, where she currently resides, to renounce her citizenship. She began by displaying her official documents proving her Israeli nationality, such as her passport, identity card, and conscription papers, noting that she previously refused military service.
She emphasized that making this decision required extensive thought and research into the history of the country whose citizenship she held. After learning the facts, especially following the recent war on Gaza, she made a firm decision. Yula asserted that she was not aware of the Nakba or Israel's colonial history in Palestine and that what was taught in school was completely different from the truth.
