The Civil Protection Department in Malta stated today, Saturday, that "a rescue team from it found hundreds of bodies on the shore of the flood-stricken city of Derna in Libya." In an interview with the "Times of Malta," Natalino Pizzina, who leads the Maltese team, said, "There were probably around 400 bodies, but it is difficult to determine." He added, "A small team from the Civil Protection Department stumbled upon a cave that was half submerged in water and found the bodies inside." Malta deployed a team of 72 rescuers from the military and the Civil Protection Department on Wednesday. The four-member team discovered the bodies after initially finding seven bodies, including those of three children, inside a cave by the sea. It is believed that the massive flooding swept the victims' bodies into the sea after heavy rains from Storm Daniel caused the collapse of two dams, washing away a quarter of the coastal city.
